If you have a vehicle that’s over three years old, it needs a yearly MOT to remain safe and roadworthy. But there’s a difference between a standard Class 4 MOT that most private cars go through and a Class 7 MOT that’s meant for commercial vehicles. If you have a commercial vehicle in Stafford, this post will show you what a commercial MOT includes and what kind of commercial vehicle repairs you could be looking at to pass.

What is a Class 7 MOT?

A Class 7 MOT works similarly to a standard Class 4 one. However, a commercial MOT is more in-depth, with extra checks to ensure light commercial vehicles are safe to carry extra weight, can break effectively, and are roadworthy.

The type of vehicle you have will determine the type of MOT you have to get for it.

What is a Class 7 vehicle?

A Class 7 vehicle is any good vehicle that ways between three and 3.5 tonnes. This includes vans, trucks, and lorries. If you have a van that weighs under 3 tonnes, you’ll need to get a standard Class 4 MOT.

Some motorhomes will also count as Class 7 vehicles, depending on the weight. If you’re unsure what your vehicle is, our mechanics can check for you, or you can look in your vehicle’s handbook.

What class MOT is my van?

If you live in Stafford and drive a work van, you might be wondering whether you need a commercial or standard MOT. If your goods van weighs over 3000kg and up to and including 3500kg, you’ll need a Class 7 MOT.

Anything over that is a heavy goods vehicle, which is a different class entirely. If your van is under that 3000kg minimum, you can get a normal Class 4 MOT. Again; your handbook should have information on the weight of your vehicle.

What class MOT is my motorhome?

Motorhomes that weigh up to 3.5 tonnes fall into the Class 4 vehicle category, so it’s slightly different from vans and trucks. Most motorhomes over this weight should also fall into the Class 4 category since they’re private vehicles. However, not all garages will have the capacity or equipment to test them, which is why most owners go to a Class 7 centre.

At Truck & Plant in Stafford, we are fully equipped to test vans, trucks, and motorhomes, so you can bring your vehicle to us for its MOT.
